Strategic framework

Port of Huelva mision consist of providing intermodality services to transport logistic chains, managing the provision of infrastructure, land and other resurces (economical, financial and human) which serve, among other services, to industrial and comercial activities, encouraging socio-economical development of its hinterland.

Based on it, Strategic Plan of the port of Huelva, which contain a vision by 2022 , explicitly identifies an upgrade of Port's conectivity  and intermodality due to they are determinat factors to its development , specifically  regarding railway transport.

The strategic relevance of intermodality in the Port of Huelva is currently based on four main pillars:

a) Railway infrastructure and connectivity of the Port, which allow a more sustanaible and efficient maritime transport .

b) Majarabique Railway Platform, located in Seville en Sevilla and been owned to Port Authority of Huelva.

c) Port of Huelva Multimodal Platform, co-financed by Connecting Europe Facility Program (CEF) and located at Muelle Sur in the Port of Huelva, it offers direct connexion with the maritime container terminal. 

d) Logistics Activity Zone, currently in project,  it will allow the concluence of different types of enterprises and activities which will give continuity, quality services, transformation and an added value to the transport logistic chains that converge in the portuary space.

Through this intermodal strategy, Port of Huelva puts in value  its rol as TEN-T core node in order to serve goods global transport logistic chains, betting decididely on give an efficient, integrated, sustanaible, safe and security service.

Railway connectivity

Port of Huelva has worked intensively on the development of its intermodal strategy both inside and outside of port service area. In fact, in 2017, it has registered more than 2,600 operations of goods railway trafics.

Internally, its actions are aimed at getting a high specialization in this area. In this way, nowadays it is avaible an high quality internal rail network, which includes the Muelle Sur Intermodal Platform and a Solid Bulk Download Pit. In a complementary way, efforts are not only oriented to the infrstructure development but also to integrate these with new technologies, working permanently on an optimization of the signaling and control system in order to offer the mayor effectiveness and eficiency in performed operations.


In the external environmental, Port of Huelva has an excellent railway connectivity with Mediterranean and Atlantic Corridors as well as Extremadura, through its Majarabique Intermodal Platform (in Seville), which constitutes an integrated project with its maritime terminal and is considered a true "extension", and through Huelva-Zafra railway line.

Majarabique Intermodal platform

Majarabique constitutes, to the Port Authority of Huelva, an Intermodal Logistic Platform which is fully integrated with its maritime terminal, being consider a true extension of it.

It is located at the railway node that connects Sevilla with Madrid and Extremadura. In this way, it allows a direct and efficient railway connection with yhe hinterland of the Port of Huelva, located in  Mediterranean and Atlantic Corridors and in Extremadura. 

It is a priority to the Port of Huelva to continue consolidating, strengthening and specializing this terminal, whose localization lets the Port of Huelva be seen as an atractive  option for routing maritimely  containerized railway cargos which came from the Central Axis (Córdoba, Linares, Castilla La Mancha, Madrid and Zaragoza), and whose destination are Atlantic Ports (Canaries, West África y  Northwest Europe, etc),  to get optimised times and costs in the complet logistic chain.

It should be noted, in particular, the investment effort that the Port Autority of Huelva is making in Majarabique and in Seville-Huelva railway stretch, which amounts more than 2.3M € in Majarabique and 5M€ in the railway section, creating new sidings to speed up the merchandise transport towards its destination.

The operation of this Railway Terminal was awarded by public tender to the company Termisur Eurocargo, S.A., which started its activity in July 2017.


From then until December 2017, the container railway traffic from Majarabique to the Port of Huelva is close to thirty trains per month, distributed in an average of twenty direct trains between Majarabique and the Muelle Sur (Port of Huelva). 

To this, we should add the ten monthly trains coming directly from the hinterland of Madrid. 

In 2018, according to the business plan of the companies involved, it is expected the consolidation of these traffics,  with a circulation of thirty direct monthly trains Majarabique-Muelle Sur, which would account for 75% of the container railway traffics of the Port of Huelva, being all this a decisive step in the consolidation of Majarabique as a reference intermodal platform in the goods transport  in the South-West of Europe.

Muelle Sur Multimodal platform

The Muelle Sur Multimodal Platform, nowadays a reality, borned as a strategic proyect for the Port of Huelva, that has been developped with teh support of CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) European Program.

This Plataform guarantees the  maximum conectivity and eficiency regards to the management of the railway traffics with Mediterranean and Atlantic Corridors as well as with Extremadura,  being perfectly sincronized with Majarabique Terminal (in Seville) and with the Muelle Sur Maritime Terminal. In addition, this Multimodal Platform  has a direct conection with Extremadura, completing the connectivity of this important railway hinterland.

The following figure shows the main characteristics of the Muelle Sur Multimodal Platform, showing the total orientation towards the contribution to the efficiency of the operations carried out in it.

This Platform, which has a direct connection to the maritime terminal, is adapted to trains of 750 m in length and has a double-track design on a plate, being connected to the railway line of the Port Authority of Huelva and the main roads located next to the current Border Inspection Point (BIP).In the first eight months since its launch, the Multimodal Platform of the South Dock had operated 200 trains (approximately 30 trains / month), having reached about 400 trains in total during the year 2017 (equivalent to 20,000 TEUs).

Muelle Sur Multimodal Platform responds to the strategic lines established within the Strategic Plan 2012-2017 with 2022 vision of the Port Authority of Huelva and has as a global objective to convert the Port of Huelva in a reference port in the European South Atlantic.




Logístic Activity zone

The Logistic Activity Zone project, essential for the future development of the Port of Huelva and its entire area of influence, will have an area of approximately 60 ha, with possibilities for expansion, and will be located in Punta del Sebo, place where there is availability of land with services and a good road and rail accessibility.

The Logistic Activity Zone will occupy a central position between the Port of Huelva and the urban nucleus, which will allow the confluence of different types of companies and activities that give continuity, quality services, transformation and added value to the transport chains that converge in the space port, in addition to favoring the generation of employment, the loyalty of current traffic and the promotion of new future traffic.
